About GWI by Dawn Sandquist
GWI is dedicated to spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ in a variety of ways – giving food, clothing, medicine, dentistry, construction work, music, and scriptural teachings on worship, marriage, managing our lives in a fallen world and on the list could go. We are rather eclectic. Although we realize that no one has a ‘balanced message’ and we aren’t striving to have one, we certainly have tried over the years to meet the needs of people where they are as we are able. However, we aren’t a giving machine.
I’ll never forget being in a poor country in the 80’s and asking the people of a certain village why they had all their garbage piled up at the end of the town; a big rat infested heap on the road leading out town! They said they didn’t know what to do with it but “the Danish were arriving next week and they would figure it out.” Red flag! It was then I realized that we, along with many other organizations, were in danger of becoming the answer box, dial-a-prophet or whatever they needed. We should help them hear, see, and discern the will of the Lord and His wisdom for their lives, but we weren't God and we couldn't and shouldn’t do it all for them. They needed to fight for their cities, towns, and villages. We were in danger of caring more than they did.
A similar thing happened when we were in Rio de Janeiro in the late 80’s. The poverty was appalling with thousands of young boys living on the streets; many did not know their names or even how old they were. If you helped one you had to help hundreds because they would follow you and call out “lady, lady!” Even in restaurants people would come in with their buckets and ask us for the food we didn’t want or couldn’t eat. There was no getting away from it and we felt helpless – utterly and totally!
I went to the Lord in prayer because I felt a responsibility but God was very clear that our responsibility was to help the church in Brazil come up with solutions and wisdom for their country. There are a lot of very wealthy people in Rio and Brazil and a big middleclass. It wasn’t for lack of resources, and God is very clear about our responsibility to help the poor, the widows and the orphans. We cared and could do our part, but this was their country and they needed to care more than us. I prayed for them regularly and I am pleased to say that the Body of Christ has risen up to address many issues and roots of issues in that country. May they continue!
God has been good to us over the years to show us our part – no less and no more. We have been able to send in construction teams, medical teams, dental teams all of which included people from the country we were in as well as surrounding countries. It was a real breakthrough when Costa Ricans came on the teams with us to aid Nicaraguans. They had never considered that and certain prejudices had prevented this from happening in the past. Walls are breaking down all over Central America as believers realize that the common bond among us all is Christ and our various cultures are way down the list in importance.
We continue to work with other missionaries in Portugal and North Africa, encouraging and strengthening them as they are on the front lines in many situations fighting powers and principalities that are hostile to the Good News. It’s so hard to imagine, even logically, why someone would be hostile against love, peace, deliverance, wisdom, healing to name a few. But they are, which is why we know it is in the spirit world that the battle rages and not against flesh and blood as Paul states.
We are continuing to put out literature and music that can be used as tools in the fight. Our monthly meditations, books, and songs are available through this Website and there is more to come, so please keep watching for new products available in 2008.
We are re-releasing our 1977 worship album, “Courts of the King” with two new cuts on it as a bonus for you to enjoy. People continually write to us about that album and there are surprises ahead and more music to come!
Thank you for keeping in touch, for giving, and for praying! We have great hope for 2008!
